Poor thermal stability: PVC is prone to decomposition at high temperatures, releasing HCl gas. Therefore, mold design should pay attention to:
Runner and sprue design: to avoid melt retention and prevent local overheating and decomposition. Cold runner is often used, but hot runner can also be used for high production (special design is required to prevent decomposition).
Exhaust system: It must be sufficient, smooth, and timely to discharge gases and decomposition products to prevent defects such as burning, material shortage, and bubbles caused by trapped gas. The position and depth of the exhaust groove are crucial.
Temperature control: Accurately control the mold temperature (usually 30-60 ° C), use room temperature water cooling to avoid local overheating.
High melt viscosity: requires high injection pressure. The mold needs to have sufficient strength and rigidity.
Pouring system: The size of the runner and gate should be reasonable to ensure smooth filling and avoid excessive pressure loss.
Corrosivity: The HCl produced by the decomposition of PVC is corrosive to steel.
Mold materials: Key components such as cavities and cores need to be made of corrosion-resistant steel, such as stainless steel (such as S136, 420, 2083, etc.), or undergo surface chrome/nickel treatment to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance, extend mold life, and ensure product smoothness.
Shrinkage rate: PVC has a certain molding shrinkage rate (usually around 0.5% -1.0%, depending on the formula and process). The shrinkage rate must be accurately considered in mold design to ensure product dimensional accuracy.
Cooling: PVC has relatively poor thermal conductivity and requires an effective cooling system to ensure production efficiency and product size stability.
