Prospects for the Development of Digital Technology in Chinese Mold Enterprises

Currently, the world is experiencing a new generation of technological revolution led by artificial intelligence, and the manufacturing industry is gradually moving towards intelligence in this wave of technological advancement. The next five years will be an important stage for the comprehensive innovation and upgrading of China's manufacturing industry, and the technological route of "parallel promotion and integrated development" should be continued. On the one hand, we should focus on consolidating the foundation, steadily promoting enterprises, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to complete the digital manufacturing "curriculum", and basically achieve digital transformation and upgrading; On the other hand, we should implement innovation leadership, grasp the good opportunity given by the new generation of information technology, such as the Internet, big data, AI, and so on, to promote and apply digital networked manufacturing, and take into account the exploration, promotion, and innovation breakthroughs of the new generation of intelligent manufacturing.
Although the mold industry has good capabilities and conditions for developing intelligent manufacturing, there are still problems of low concentration and weak innovation ability. In the process of promoting digital technology, there is a long-term lack of unified understanding of development trends, a lack of professional and mature suppliers of mold digitization and intelligent technology, and a high dependence on foreign countries. It is urgent to achieve digital transformation through innovation driven approaches, promote intelligent manufacturing to change the production mode and industrial form of molds, and achieve industrial upgrading and sustainable development. Based on the characteristics of the mold industry and China's national conditions, digital technology for molds should mainly focus on the following aspects.
(1) The key to empowering technology is to promote the comprehensive development of domestic industrial software. The development of CAE software for Chinese molds is mainly concentrated in universities. Although the core algorithms are not inferior to foreign software, the breadth and depth of engineering applications still need to be improved under the influence of the unique mold industry ecology and simulation software industry ecology in China. The accumulation of engineering data is limited, and a virtuous cycle of development, application, feedback, and optimization has not yet been formed. Through policy guidance, social capital promotion, and industry university research cooperation, it is urgent to form a group of CAE software products and well-known commercial enterprises that compete with international peers. Meanwhile, domestic CAD software has achieved independent innovation and rapidly developed in the field of 3D CAD, with a certain increase in market share. In the future, Chinese 3D CAD software manufacturers should strengthen their expansion in the field of mold design, enhance their core competitiveness, and promote the deep integration and application of domestic mold CAD/CAE/CAM.
(2) Strengthen the application and integration of AI and mold industry software, such as the currently implemented AI applications that use AI multimodal search engines to achieve efficient retrieval of 2D, 3D, sketches, and images; Applying AI intelligent process planning, achieving one click matching of processes and applying AI visual technology to achieve intelligent work progress.
(3) Adopting digital and intelligent technologies in production methods to improve production efficiency, reduce costs, and save energy and consumption. There is still a significant gap in per capita output between China's mold industry and developed industrial countries abroad. The deep application of robots and automated production lines, as well as the integration of digital technology, network technology, and intelligent technology into the entire process of mold design, manufacturing, and testing, will become important means for mold enterprises to improve production efficiency and reduce costs.
